You see that in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. As explained on the 'Doombuggies.com' site. As you pass an inverted face image on a wall, it seems to turn and follow you.
The first couple times I saw it, I saw the mask as hollow. I had to wrap my brain around what he was saying before I could see the 'pink' face....But now that I CAN see the pink face, I can't go back to seeing the mask as hollow. Weird.
the first time i watched it...it looked hollow to me, it wasn't til i could hear through his accent that it was suppose to look like a full face, did i see it
The placement of the lighting is probably important. The illusion comes from how those subtle shadows are being cast, especially of the nose. Not to mention the guy talking seems to be a hypnotist. His voice. There. You see. Yes. Quack like a duck. QUACK! QUACK!
This is the same illusion thats at Disney in the Haunted Mansion. They use masks of presidents and place them on the wall and it looks like they are moving when thay are not.
The exact same thing happened to me as with Noah. I saw the hollow inside of a mask the first three time and had no clue what the narrator was talking about. Suddenly I saw the other face, and now I can't make it hollow anymore! :-(
If you want to see it as hollow again, focus only on his tie as it rotates and then look up. You can see it as hollow for a split second before your brain "compensates"
Actually the "changing light" is the automatic white balance correction of the camera. The inside is light and the outside is dark, so the background looks like it changes light.
You can test it yourself if you have a camera or a webcam, just put a white sheet of paper in front of it and watch the background light change...

Wow nice illusion, good explaining too.
Actually, no it is not impossible to see it hollow. I had to try seeing the back of it sticking out.

WTF....I wasted 2 minutes of my life on that, they could have got the point across in 30 seconds
And you wasted another two minutes with that pointless comment.
he's looking at me!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm with Noah... thats EXACTLY what happened to me

All of a sudden I feel the urge to quack... Hoink what have you done to me?

Okay....QUACK!
Are you happy now?
Same thing - I didn't see the face until the third rotation - I was seeing the inside of the mask. Now I can't see it as hollow any more!
It kind of reminds me of the dragon illusion.
That was the scariest thing i have ever seen!! very trippy
Each time the mask rotates the light changes so that the room becomes dark and another light strikes the mask so that it looks as if it pops out.
everybody's gotta friggin answer...yadda yadda yadda
Man I saw it right away. I must just have a more powerful brain. Haha yeah right.

I think they do the same thing on the Hauntede Mansion ride at disney. They put the masks backwards so that they seem like they are following you.

That gave me the smallest hard-on I've ever had. Thanks.
Charlie Chaplin sucks.
I really really really love cheese.
they are playing with the light if you didnt notice!
